Dr. Srikanth KONDAPALLI
Dr. Srikanth Kondapalli is a Professor in Chinese Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). He served as the Dean of the School of International Studies (SIS), JNU (2022–2024) and as the Chairman of the Centre for East Asian Studies at SIS, JNU during the periods 2008–2010, 2012–2014, 2016–2018, 2018–2020, and 2022. Since August 2022, he has held the Chair of Excellence under the Ministry of Defence.
Dr. Kondapalli's academic background in Chinese studies spans both India and China. He earned a Ph.D. in Chinese Studies, studied Chinese at Beijing Language & Culture University, and was a post-doctoral visiting fellow at People’s University, Beijing (1996–1998). He has held numerous academic positions, including Visiting Professor at National Chengchi University, Taipei (2004), and Visiting Fellow at the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations, Beijing (2007). He also served as an Honorary Professor at Shandong University, Jinan (2009–2019), Jilin University, Changchun (2014), and Yunnan University of Finance and Economics, Kunming (2016–2017). Additionally, he is a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at People’s University since 2014 and a Fellow at Salzburg Global Seminar (2010).
Dr. Kondapalli has authored two books, China’s Military: The PLA in Transition (1999) and China’s Naval Power(2001), as well as two monographs. He has co-edited six volumes, including Asian Security & China (2004), China and its Neighbours (2010), China’s Military and India (2012), China and the BRICS: Setting up a Different Kitchen (2016), One Belt One Road – China’s Global Outreach (2017), China and Covid-19 – Domestic and External Dimensions (2020).
His research on China has also been published extensively in journals and edited volumes. Dr. Kondapalli received the K. Subrahmanyam Award for Excellence in Research in Strategic and Security Studies (2010).
In addition to his academic achievements, Dr. Kondapalli serves as guest faculty at various Indian armed forces institutions, including the National Defence College, Army War College, College of Air Warfare, College of Naval Warfare, and College of Defence Management. He is a distinguished fellow at think tanks such as the Vivekananda International Foundation and the Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies.
He has supervised over 30 Ph.D. researchers at JNU and serves as an academic advisor for doctoral researchers at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Ablai Khan University (Almaty), and Tamkang University (Taipei). He was also the editor of the JNU SIS International Studies Journal, published by Sage.
